Eve swam up towards the jetty. The water felt good. Cold and refreshing. She was enjoying how it made her tingle all over. How it made her feel clean again - "like a new born baby" she thought.
She looked up to the jetty. Egbert her cyber owl was sitting perched on an upturned bucket with a towel draped over his head - covering one metallic eye. The remaining eye was more than enough to keep watch over her. Which of course was why he was here.

She was looking forward to breakfast. Smoked kippers she thought "I'll cook them the old fashioned way". "Eggers" she shouted - Egbert who had been busy solving pi to nth degree - nearly feel off his perch. "Can you get a fire going?"

She thought how lucky she was. A year ago no-one would have risked spending this much time outside - never mind swimming. But now they had evolved - and were resistant to most of the Earth's toxins - including the radiation. It seemed almost miraculous.

She sighed and looked up at the rising sun coming over the trees tops. A figure came out of the forest and past the log cabin up towards the jetty. Dressed in a black rad suit - designed to protect humans from the radiation and toxic air "Why would anyone need to wear that" she thought.

She looked more closely. The figure seemed strangely familiar. Something about that walk. It's Brellan! On my god it’s Brellan! She covered the last few meters the jetty in a few seconds - jumped out of the water - grabbed the towel from Egbert’s head and ran to meet him.
They hugged smiling. He was still slim and upright. He'd lost most of his hair - she thought it suited him. His face looked older than his 45 years though. It was lined and tired. The last time she had seen him was back in military training school when she was 17.

"Hello Eve " he said still holding her and smiling "It’s good to see you" "Brellan I can't believe you're here" said Eve "How did you find me" "Alaska isn't Pluto" he laughed "just a few hours on an air-ship". She noticed he hadn't answered her question -strange. Her location was supposed to be secret even from respected military training officers like Brellan.
Brellan's face went serious. "I'm afraid I have bad news Eve "
"What is it?" Something about his face scared her.

"The radiation sickness is back"
